An old juniper tree enhances the backdrop at Porto Sa Ruxi beach. It’s one of the most photographed trees in south Sardinia.
What if you could visit three beaches in one day? That’s exactly what you’ll get at Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi, a series of three rocky coves and sandy beaches. Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi is located shy west of the seaside village with the same name, 10 kilometers southwest of Villasimius. It is the westernmost beach of the protected marine area of Capo Carbonara. Beach access is easy with its close proximity to the Strada Provinciale 17 to Solanas, Geremeas and Cagliari. All three coves at Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi face south and feature splendid scenery. The beaches are backed by centuries-old junipers (Juniperus phoenicea) that are of immense biological value, and are part of an intact Mediterranean maquis that is unique to the territory of Villasimius. The entire stretch has a length of more than 500 meters. Generally speaking, all three coves are perfect for some light snorkeling. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available at the La Capannina bar and restaurant. Stay at Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi for a few days if you can, and you’ll understand that it’s one of the best beaches in south Sardinia. Or ask the locals, and they’ll say, “Porto Sa Ruxi è la spiaggia più bella di Villasimius!”

Let’s cover the three coves in more detail:

Cove 1 (west)

the west side of spiaggia porto sa ruxi near villasimius south sardinia
Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi, looking in the direction of Cagliari. Stray rocks add to the marvelous scenery.

The first cove has a length of 200 meters and is located on the west side (on your right if you’re looking out over the sea) in the direction of Solanas. It is the furthest away from the quiet residential area of Porto Sa Ruxi, where the parking area is located. It’s easy to reach on foot if you follow the footpath to the west; two smaller paths lead you to the cove. Most of this cove is backed by juniper trees. Both sides of the beach are decorated with rocky patches where the snorkeling is terrific. You’ll spot plenty of fish; the biodiversity is impressive. Depending on the season, those who’d like to enjoy more privacy can find it at the first cove. It is generally less visited but still beautiful for its dazzling colors and crystal-clear water. On the horizon, you can gaze at the small island Scogli de Piscadeddus in the distance.

Cove 2 (middle)

The middle section of Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi where centuries-old junipers offer some cooling shade.

The second and middle cove is a bit wider than the first one. It’s about 200 meters long. On the back side, the junipers are a bit more numerous, and the footpath leads to the middle of the beach. Both edges of this cove are dotted with granite rocks; they’re good spots for fish to find shelter, so you know where to go snorkeling.

Cove 3 (east)

The dreamy landscape of the east side of Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi. In the background, you can see the headlands of Capo Carbonara.

The third cove of Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi is closest to the residential area and the smallest of the famous trio. It has a length of about 110 meters. You’ll also spot rocks here; they reach out into the sea a bit further on the east side of this cove. When the good vibes call for some diving and jumping off the rocks, it will likely be here!

Lunch in the shade at La Capannina

At La Capannina, you can enjoy a sumptuous beachside lunch and aperetivo in the shade. You’ll discover plenty of dishes on the menu, including spaghetti vongole, spaghetti Pomodoro, cuttlefish, and tiramisu for dessert. For a Sardinian Chiosco Bar, the wine list is quite impressive. La Capannina’s staff will effortlessly serve even a negroni at the end of the afternoon. Stay until sunset; you won’t regret it.

How To Get To Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi

The parking area has room for about 25 cars and will cost around 10 Euros for the day. When it gets busier at Porto Sa Ruxi, there’s probably room for more on one side of Via Abruzzo. If you’re using Google Maps for navigation, type in “Spiaggia Porto Sa Ruxi.” If you omit “Spiaggia,” you will be guided to a nearby village!
