Welcome to Spiaggia di Cala Pira, one of the best beaches in southeast Sardinia! It is located between Villasimius and Sant’Elmo, and it’s easy to get there. This beach is one of the more popular spots in the Costa Rei area and usually gets crowded in August but less so in September. With sand of Caribbean quality- it even has that pinkish hue at the waterfront – kids will love it here, as the beach is clean, the water is shallow, and usually calm. With a length of 500 meters, they’ll find plenty of room to build sandcastles. If not, they’ll enjoy playing at the rocky pools for hours. Spiaggia di Cala Pira faces southeast, and the views are simply stunning. The horizon is embellished with panoramic views of Isola Serpentara, situated 5 kilometers off the coast. On the left (to the northeast), there’s the recently restored Torre di Cala Pira, an ancient watchtower. The beach is sheltered to the right by a long peninsula with rocky patches and coves. A few apartments back Cala Pira with ocean view gardens on the south side. These holiday accommodations extend to the middle of the beach, but you’ll see more vegetation behind you here. The northeast side (near the parking lot) is the best spot, as no buildings are nearby. Swim out to the left, and you’ll see a few rocky patches where snorkeling is recommended.

Snorkeling at Spiaggi di Cala Pira

If you plan on snorkeling near the rocks on the northeast side, expect some fish to approach you as they are pretty used to people. You’ll likely encounter cuttlefish, shallow-water animals known to inhabit tropical and temperate ocean waters. They mostly swim at the bottom, where shrimp and crabs are found. Cuttlefish are pretty popular in southern Europe. In northeast Italy, they are used in risotto al nero di seppia (risotto with cuttlefish ink.) While snorkeling, please pay attention to the boats coming and going during high season!
