If you were trying to conjure up the picture-perfect image of a quaint Sardinian cove setting, you could do worse than looking at Spiaggia Cala Burroni. Set right on the southernmost tip of the Villasimius headlands, this quiet cove lies right in the middle of Area Naturale Marina Protetta Capo Carbonara, with the magnificent Tyrrhenian Sea stretching as far as the eye can see and Isola Dei Cavoli casually interrupting the horizon. Can you spot the lighthouse? That’s Faro Dell’Isola Dei Cavoli, one of the most beautiful lighthouses of Sardinia; it was built in 1858 and recently reopened in 2021. As it is now a host to a museum, It has become a famous landmark, and a taxi boat service can take you to Cavoli Island. As you might expect, Spiaggia Cala Burroni offers next to nothing when it comes to services. Just a tiny stretch of sand, a rockier part on the south side of the beach, Mediterranean maquis behind the beach, and a few dusty footpaths to get around the area. The cove faces southeast and has a length of a mere 160 meters. Come here early enough (or just before sunset), and all you’ll find is privacy. If you like hiking, explore the footpaths for a few hours. Snorkeling here for a while isn’t a bad idea, especially on the north side where the big rocks are. Whether you spend just a few hours here or on a day trip to explore the other beaches of Villasimius, don’t forget to bring some drinks and snacks. Please remember to clean up your trash when you leave – it’s no coincidence this is a protected zone, so treat the fragile landscape respectfully.
